Large-Format Fire-Rated Glazing Selected for Hotel Stairwell

The SO brand is behind this modern new hotel in the heart of Auckland. Amongst the designer furniture and mood lighting, there is still the need to meet the fire compliance. NZ Fire doors were contracted to supply the fire-rated glass and doors in the project.

The stairwell required design advice and collaboration as it had to fit with the overall design of the hotel. Requiring a 30-minute fire rating, the stairwell starts at the podium level and services three floors down to the lower basement. NZFD supplied Pyranova fire-resistant glass for the project to meet the required fire rating without compromising on aesthetic.

The Pyranova S3 glass used for this project is a 15mm multi-laminate glass. For at least 30 minutes the Pyranova glass will not only prevent the penetration of flame and harmful gases (glass integrity) but will also withstand the intense heat transfer (insulating properties). It is the combination of these two properties that give hotel patrons the best chance of escape in the event of a fire.

A common perception of fire-rated glass is that only a small viewing panel can be used, typically as a door vision panel. Pyranova S3 glass enables designers to incorporate large panels, meeting a 30-minute rating in panel sizes up to 3 x 2m. For the stairwell at SO, panels of 2 x 2m Pyranova glass were used. The timber framing was made of American White Ash stained black supplied and installed by the client. This same timber and glass combination was also used for the doors into the stairwell. The 2700mm doors are fully glazed except for a 150mm timber trim to the leaf.

While the Pyranova S is an obvious choice for fire compliance, it also has excellent optical clarity. Looking through the glass there is no visible difference between normal float glass and the multi-laminate fire glass.

While the stairwell is the key feature, NZFD also supplied the various fire rated doors to the hotel rooms and service areas. While not fire rated, the conference room doors added some flair with a brass metal trim design fitted by the client.

NZFD are the processing partners for Schott Pyranova glass in New Zealand for the Pyranova range of fire-resistant glass.
